Traverse City State Hospital before its renovations. mrcloudies:it’s much less sinister looking today. The Traverse City State Hospital is a massive, former mental institution that closed in the 80’s. It has miles of underground tunnels that connect all the buildings on the complex. Which is rather huge

The main building itself is massive. Which is called building 50.

About ten years ago the whole complex was purchased from the city, and renovated as a mixed use residential and commercial property. And is now refereed to as The Village at Grand Traverse Commons. Here is a gallery of before and after pictures.

It’s interesting, because thousands of people died in the building. It was very much into experimental treatments at the turn of the last century, and had one of the larger schizophrenia wards in the country.

It’s an awesome place today. Lots of cool restaurants, cafes and art galleries there. Not to mention the houses are gorgeous.

But part of me misses the old creepy building it once was.
